England to test rule stopping goalie time-wasting

A sweeping reform is being prepared in England to counter time-wasting tactics that slow down the pace of football and frustrate fans worldwide. In recent years, it has become increasingly common for goalkeepers to go down with tactical or fake injuries, deliberately stopping play to allow managers time to give touchline instructions or simply to disrupt the opponent's momentum. To combat this growing trend, English football is ready to introduce a remarkable trial rule designed explicitly to stop goalkeepers from using medical attention as a time-wasting tool.

According to information reported by BBC Sport, the proposal has received unanimous backing from all major governing bodies across the English game. The Football Association (FA), Premier League, English Football League (EFL), National League, and the Women’s Super League (WSL) have all officially endorsed the initiative. However, for the trial to be officially implemented on the pitch, it still requires final approval from the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the independent guardian of the Laws of the Game.

The mechanics of the proposed trial are clear and act as a strong deterrent. Under the new guidelines, if a goalkeeper goes down injured and requires treatment on the field, the team's manager will have just 10 seconds to make a crucial decision. The manager must nominate one outfield player who will be required to leave the pitch for a full minute while the goalkeeper receives medical attention. Consequently, the team will be forced to play with a man down during that one-minute window. This measure aims to eliminate artificial delays, protect the natural flow of the game, and ensure that injuries are treated genuinely rather than used for tactical advantage.
