When all the drama of the Champions League final ended, the eyes of the man embracing the trophy in the centre circle of the Puskás Aréna were looking far beyond the arena. The hidden story beneath Luis Enrique's victory is now known to everyone: in August 2019, his daughter Xana, only 9 years old, lost to a rare form of bone cancer (osteosarcoma). The Spanish manager, responding to PSG fans and the media on Saturday night, shared a message for his daughter that has become a moment more lasting than the final's trophy: "Xana is still watching us. How would I want her to see us feeling bad?"

These words are the continuation of another interview Luis Enrique gave earlier. Last year, when he beat Inter Milan 5-0 in Munich and lifted PSG's first ever Champions League trophy in their history, Enrique had also taken the field with an image of Xana: on the night Barcelona won the UEFA Champions League final against Juventus in Berlin in 2015, the 5-year-old Xana came onto the field and planted a Barcelona flag at the centre spot together with her father. That photo became one of the most beloved moments in Spanish football history. On Saturday night, PSG supporters too unfurled a giant tifo recreating the same scene; Xana and her father, this time with the blue-and-red PSG flag at the centre circle.

Enrique's statements on Saturday night were short but heartfelt. "I have a thousand memories with her. Xana is still watching us — but how would I want her to see us feeling bad?" His words summarized his stance: 6 years on, he is no longer a father crying behind his daughter, but a man who learned to smile in her absence. This was a natural continuation of the words he said after the 2025 final: "I don't need to win the Champions League to remember my daughter; I think about her every day."

Xana's story left deep marks in the football world. In March-April 2019, the family learned of their daughter's diagnosis, and a five-month treatment process began. Luis Enrique was the manager of the Spanish national team at the time; he stepped down from his post in June 2019 to spend time with his family during the treatment process. Xana said goodbye to life on August 29, 2019, just a few months after her birthday. After this tragedy, the family founded the Xana Foundation (Fundación Xana); they aim to support families of children fighting cancer and contribute to pediatric oncology research.

The black t-shirt Enrique wore on Saturday night was not a coincidence either. On it was a special design drawn by the Xana Foundation: an image of little Xana and her father planting the PSG flag in the centre of the pitch together. This was similar to the t-shirt he wore when they beat Inter in 2025. Enrique, who came onto the field the moment keeper Safonov saved Gabriel's final penalty, even looked at the sky with his eyes while hugging his players.

The gesture from PSG fans was also striking. Last year's tifo in Munich came to life again at Puskás Aréna this year. Considering PSG was founded in 1970 and the club spent its last six years around star transfers such as Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappé, this emotional unity is important: the club and the manager have now become a family sharing the same feeling. Since Enrique came to the club in July 2023, they have won two Ligue 1 and two Champions League trophies, followed by a UEFA Super Cup; but none of these takes as much space in hearts as the memories dedicated to Xana.

Right now Luis Enrique has entered the ranks of rare managers who have won the Champions League at two different clubs. With Barcelona in 2015, with PSG in 2025 and 2026. As the second club in modern Champions League history to successfully defend its title, PSG has entered history for two consecutive cups. But for the 55-year-old manager, all these victories revolve around a single theme: "Xana is still watching us." So they chose to be happy in her absence, so they can feel her always by their side.
