The first half of the match at Odense Stadium had ended in a positive picture for Denmark. Patrick Dorgu, the Danish player who wears the Manchester United jersey, opened the score with a magnificent shot in the 13th minute, and Denmark went ahead 2-1. In the 20th minute of the second half, everyone experienced the somersault with their eyes at once: Christian Eriksen suddenly fell to the ground while running without the ball in the centre of the field. Silence descended on the field instantaneously, both Danish and Ukrainian players formed a circle around Eriksen and called for the medical team. Some players burst into tears after the incident; the shock experienced by those who remembered the scene from 2021 was great. After the urgent intervention that lasted about five minutes, it was announced that Eriksen had regained consciousness.
The incident had deeply shaken the football world because Eriksen had experienced a similar scene about five years ago. On June 12, 2021, in the Euro 2020 opening match, Denmark faced Finland at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen. In the 42nd minute of that match, Eriksen, who suddenly fell to the ground while running without the ball at the touchline, had suffered cardiac arrest and was brought back to life on the field with cardiac massage. After the medical intervention that lasted about 10 minutes, he was taken off the field on a stretcher, and it was announced shortly afterwards that he was conscious. After the incident, an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) device was placed in his heart. Italian club Inter Milan had to part ways with Eriksen because he could not play with an ICD according to Serie A rules; the Danish player, whose football life was thought to be over, made a return to football under the Brentford jersey and subsequently transferred to Manchester United.
The bright rings of the comeback story increased. Eriksen, who was in the Denmark squad in the 2022 World Cup, scored against Slovenia in the 2024 European Championship. The experienced midfielder, who wore the jersey in more than 310 Premier League matches during the Manchester United period, left the English team in the summer of 2025 and signed a two-year contract with Bundesliga's Wolfsburg team. Although it is known that the 33-year-old player had difficulty getting minutes from time to time in the season he spent at Wolfsburg, he continued to be an indispensable figure for the Denmark National Team. Eriksen, who recorded 46 goals in 144 international matches, was one of the names being prepared in the Denmark squad for the 2026 World Cup journey this summer.
After the match was suspended by the referee, the players of both countries came together on the field; the fans who filled the stands sent a message of support with applause for a long time. In the first statements made while Eriksen was being transferred to the hospital by ambulance, his condition was reported to be good. Additional statements are expected from the Danish Football Association and the Wolfsburg side after the incident. The course of Christian Eriksen's health condition is of critical importance both for the Denmark National Team's 2026 World Cup journey and for Wolfsburg's plans for the upcoming season. The entire world football community is sending get-well messages to the experienced midfielder again after this difficult scene; the second scary moment experienced for one of football's stars caused everyone on the field to hold their breath.
