FIFA proposed that the opening match of the U15 Football Festival, which it will hold for the first time, be played between Israel and Palestine. According to The Athletic's report, world football's governing body is taking a noteworthy step and plans to organise a match between young players from the two countries despite the geopolitical tension. The tournament, which is planned to be held in the USA, will be open to all 211 member federations including Russia, which has been banned by FIFA since 2022. The U15 festival, which gained official status with the decision taken by the FIFA Council on 17 December 2025, will be held this year for the men's category and in 2027 for the women's category.
FIFA's initiative stands out as an important agenda item in world football. The U15 festival, developed after President Gianni Infantino's long-standing statements regarding Russia's reintegration into football, is evaluated as one of the critical steps taken in this regard. Russia's ban from international matches after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine caused the country's football to experience a great isolation. UEFA and FIFA allowed Russia's U17 teams to play under neutral colours without using the national anthem and flag in 2023, but stepped back from this decision after intense reactions from federations. FIFA's new U15 festival may rekindle the debate on this issue. The Israel-Palestine match proposal came to the agenda with the idea of positioning football as a bridge above political tensions. It was remembered that former FIFA President Sepp Blatter had previously proposed a "peace match" between the two countries in 2015. Reactions from federations regarding FIFA's initiative will be monitored in the coming period.
