The Golden State Warriors are keeping one of their most familiar faces for another season. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, free agent guard Gary Payton II has agreed to a one-year, $3.9 million deal to return for the 2026-27 campaign. The figure matches the veteran's minimum salary of $3,876,529 for a player of his experience, confirming the deal is at minimum terms.
Payton put together the best season of his career last year, setting personal bests with 73 games played and 7.5 points per game, along with 3.6 rebounds, while tying his career high of 1.7 assists. His relationship with the Warriors dates back to a 10-day contract late in the 2020-21 season. After spending the full 2021-22 campaign in Golden State and helping the team win an NBA title, he left in free agency for a three-year, $28 million deal with the Portland Trail Blazers.
Payton was later traded back to the Warriors at the 2023 deadline and has remained with the club ever since. Known primarily for his defensive ability, he has also shown flashes of offensive skill with his knack for getting to the rim. The new deal comes after the Warriors secured Steve Kerr's return on a two-year contract, as the front office continues to build a competitive roster around Stephen Curry. Kristaps Porzingis is also expected to stay with the club on a two-year, $40 million deal.
