Gasperini's new target: Alejandro Garnacho

Roma's search for attacking reinforcements has locked onto a striking name. According to the report, the Italian side are pushing to sign Chelsea's Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho to strengthen head coach Gian Piero Gasperini's attack. Roma continue working on a deal for the player while waiting for the London club to soften their stance.

The knot in the talks lies in the formula of the transfer. Chelsea want a permanent sale and have set a €50 million price tag for the player; however, a concrete offer at that level is yet to arrive. Roma, meanwhile, hope to put on the table the model that worked in the Donyell Malen transfer: a loan with an option to buy. That formula would allow the Italian side to limit their initial outlay and evaluate the Argentine over the course of the season. The coming hours are said to have the potential to bring a turning point in the negotiations, depending on the offer Roma propose.

The picture on the player's side gives Roma encouragement. Joining Chelsea from Manchester United for around €45 million plus add-ons in August 2025, the 22-year-old Garnacho failed to meet expectations in London and was pushed to the fringes of Xabi Alonso's project. The Argentine star is reported to be open to a move to the capital, with the presence of his compatriot Paulo Dybala, whose new contract has just been completed, potentially holding a key role in the transfer.

This move is part of Roma's changing course. Accelerating their search after primary target Mason Greenwood's agreement with Fenerbahce, and with their appeal boosted by a Champions League return after seven years, the Italian side's other target under the same umbrella (BlueCo) is Strasbourg's Belgian winger Diego Moreira; an offer of €35 million plus bonuses is on the agenda in that file.
