German federation announces agreement with Klopp

One of world football's most talked-about managers is returning to the international stage. The German Football Association (DFB) has announced that an agreement in principle has been reached for Jürgen Klopp to take over the national team following Julian Nagelsmann's resignation. Once the deal is finalised, Klopp will leave his role as Red Bull's Head of Global Soccer to return to coaching.

The process was set in motion by Germany's disappointing World Cup campaign. They were eliminated in the round of 32 after a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay — the first time in the nation's history they had gone out on penalties, a result that made Nagelsmann's position untenable. Following the young coach's resignation, the DFB turned officially to Klopp, long regarded as their dream appointment, and talks progressed rapidly.

The picture is becoming increasingly clear on Klopp's side. The German coach is expected to sign a four-year deal with the national team, meaning he would lead Germany at the 2028 European Championship and the 2030 World Cup. A verbal exit clause in Klopp's Red Bull contract, allowing him to leave should the national team job become available, made negotiations considerably smoother. Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff is also said to be supportive of the talks.

For Klopp, who has not managed since leaving Liverpool in 2024, the role represents the first opportunity of his career to coach a national team. Regarded as one of the most accomplished managers of his generation thanks to his success at Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, Klopp is expected to spearhead a long-term rebuild. The appointment is set to be made official once the final contract details and the terms of his departure from Red Bull have been resolved.
