In the final Group D match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Paraguay and Australia met at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, and the first half ended goalless. In this crucial match played for second place and a last-32 ticket, Australia, for whom even a draw is enough thanks to their head-to-head advantage, were the side in control in the first 45 minutes.

Australia's dominance marked the overall match. Tony Popovic's side held a clear edge over their opponents in possession (63%) and expected goals (0.26-0.05), and led 6-1 in total shots. But Australia could not turn this superiority into a clear scoring chance and produced no "big chance" in the first half. Paraguay, who need a win, were ineffective in attack with star player Miguel Almiron suspended and managed only one shot.

In a game that turned tougher towards the end of the first half, Cristian Volpato made a hard challenge in the 45+6th minute. Paraguay, who have to win to advance, are expected to take more risks and push forward in the second half. Australia, if the current picture holds, will secure a place in the World Cup last 16 for a second consecutive time. The second half of the match, refereed by Clement Turpin, is expected to be far more lively.
