Golden State Warriors Declare 2026-27 a Transition Year

Golden State Warriors are entering the new season with tempered expectations. According to NBC Sports' Monte Poole, Dub Nation had been warned in advance that 2026-27 was shaping up as a "gap year," with the offseason focus set to be on internal development rather than external additions. Poole wrote: "The Warriors anticipate evaluating the first half of the season while awaiting the midseason returns of Butler and Moody. Meanwhile, Dunleavy & Co. still have some latitude with the roster. But it's hard to fathom striking gold in August or September."

It's worth recalling that the Warriors have struggled since their fourth championship run in 2021-22, having lost key rotation pieces such as Klay Thompson, Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins, compounded by the natural decline of veterans like Draymond Green and Gary Payton II. After finishing last season with a 37-45 record in the Western Conference, the club found little opportunity to strengthen its roster this summer, with the recovery of Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody from knee injuries further complicating matters.

It's emphasised that surrounding Stephen Curry — who averaged 26.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game last season while shooting 46.8% from the field, proving he can still perform at a high level — with the right supporting cast remains the front office's primary task. The club is said to be relying on internal growth this season, trusting the development of young players such as Moses Moody and newly drafted Yaxel Lendeborg, with the process, while difficult, potentially setting up a rewarding opportunity down the road.
