Group B top-spot clash: Switzerland-Canada date

In the final 2026 FIFA World Cup Group B match, Switzerland face Canada for top spot at BC Place in Vancouver. With four points each from their first two games, both have all but secured the last 32. But victory in Vancouver will decide who finishes top of the group and therefore lands an easier tie, on paper, in the first knockout round. A draw suits Canada, who lead on goal difference; that result would also confirm both teams finish in the top two.

For Switzerland, Murat Yakin's side are on the up. After a 1-1 opening draw with Qatar in which they conceded a stoppage-time goal, the Nati found their cutting edge by beating Bosnia & Herzegovina 4-1. Per SI, Switzerland stand out for squad quality and could take the field with just one change from the Qatar win; but they know they must overcome a confident Canada with home advantage.

Canada, like their fellow hosts, are unbeaten at the tournament and claimed their first World Cup win in history by beating Qatar 6-0. But their sternest test comes in this final game. There is also bad news for Canada, who trail Switzerland for squad depth: Ismaël Koné's horrific leg break against Qatar has ended his tournament, while Alphonso Davies, back from a long-term injury, could start on the bench again as he builds fitness. Nathan Saliba will step into midfield for Koné. The goalscoring load will be carried by Jonathan David and Cyle Larin, who have five goals between them this summer.

Sports Illustrated did not share a clear score prediction for this game, but did name both teams' probable XIs. The two nations have met only once, a 3-1 Canada win in a 2002 friendly. Switzerland's tournament experience and Canada's home energy point to a tight contest in Vancouver.
