England captain Harry Kane has become the holder of a new record for his country. Finding the net in the group game England won 2-0 against Panama, Kane claimed the title of England's all-time leading scorer in World Cup history.

Kane's goal was his 11th at World Cups, leaving behind by one the record of 10 that had long been held by Gary Lineker. England's goals were opened by Jude Bellingham in the 62nd minute, before Bellingham's assist in the 67th allowed Kane to double the lead and reach the historic moment. It was Kane's third goal of the tournament.

The comparison shows the scale of Kane's achievement. Lineker spread his 10 World Cup goals across two tournaments: six in 1986, when he won the Golden Boot, and four more in 1990. Kane, meanwhile, has reached 11 with six in 2018 (also a Golden Boot), two in 2022, and three so far at this tournament. Kane thereby joined David Beckham as only the second England player to score at three different World Cups.

Already England's all-time top scorer, Kane added another prestigious achievement to his international career with this goal. The forward, who also plays for Bayern Munich, said afterwards that it was a proud moment. Gary Lineker himself, earlier in the tournament, praised the man who surpassed him as the "greatest English striker we've ever had." Finishing top of Group L, England will face DR Congo in the Round of 32; Kane's next target will be to climb the global list.
