Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo and his partner Noa van der Bij have shared a profound loss. On Saturday, June 27, the couple announced that their unborn son had died during pregnancy. The baby had been due in October; the couple already have a son together.
In a post on social media, Van der Bij wrote that they were sharing the news with broken hearts, remembering their son with love. In his own message, Gakpo said it was an incredibly difficult time for the family and asked for privacy and understanding.
The loss came while Gakpo was with the Netherlands at the World Cup. The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) said the player will remain with the squad for the tournament. The Netherlands, with Gakpo in the group, will face Morocco in the Round of 32 on Monday.
The 27-year-old forward, who also plays for Liverpool, had been in good form in the group stage, scoring twice in three matches, including a brace against Sweden. For now, though, he is going through a difficult period away from football, alongside his family.
The loss suffered by the Gakpo family resonated widely across the football world, with many sending messages of condolence and support to the couple. The only wish expressed by the player and his partner was to be given space during this sensitive time.
