In 2026 FIFA World Cup Group G, Belgium and Iran drew goalless at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. Hugely dominant on the pitch, Belgium could not break down Iran's disciplined, committed defence over 90 minutes and left with just a point.

Reaching 70% possession and pressing constantly in the opposition half, Belgium created numerous chances led by Kevin De Bruyne. But Iran, set up by Amir Ghalenoei with a back five, packed bodies behind the ball and repeatedly blocked the Red Devils' clear chances. Despite 23 shots and 1.82 expected goals (xG), Belgium could not unpick a Team Melli defence marshalled by goalkeeper Beiranvand.

Iran's resistance grew even more valuable given they did not even have a numerical advantage. In the 66th minute, Belgium were reduced to 10 men when Nordin Ngoy was sent off for a pull; even so, Iran protected their goal in the remaining minutes to reach a historic point. A Mehdi Taremi finish in the 25th was ruled out for offside — the one clear moment Iran came close to scoring. Lukaku (3') and Ezatolahi (33') were booked.

The match was officiated by Argentine referee Darío Herrera. In front of over 70,000 fans, Iran kept their group hopes alive with this resilience against a much stronger opponent on paper. Having drawn 2-2 with New Zealand in their opener, Team Melli reached two points from two games with this result. Belgium, meanwhile, failed to turn their dominance into a goal, missing a big chance and taking their last-32 maths to the final match.
