The 1980-1981 season, which witnessed one of the greatest struggles in Turkish football history in terms of the points table, is etched in memories with an incredible congestion created by the two-point system. The fact that the numbers of victories and draws obtained by the teams were very close to each other led to great uncertainty at both the top and bottom of the league until the final weeks. The most striking example of this historical balance in the standings emerged with the points difference between Adanaspor, which finished the league in second place, and the relegated teams being only five. The rule of awarding two points for a win, which was applied at that time, caused Adanaspor in second place and Galatasaray in third place to collect 34 points, while fourth-placed Gaziantepspor remained at 33 points. Besiktas and Eskisehirspor, located in the middle of the standings, closed the season with 31 points each, while Zonguldakspor, Kocaelispor, and Bursaspor obtained 30 points each.
The real miracle and unprecedented drama were experienced in the relegation zone. When the final whistle of the season blew, it was seen that Fenerbahce, Altay, Adana Demirspor, Boluspor, and Rizespor had exactly 29 points on the table. As a result of this historical tie, Fenerbahce, which had a better goal difference compared to its rivals, managed to stay in the league, narrowly avoiding a massive disaster. Rizespor, having the same points, became the victim of goal difference and was the third team to be relegated after Mersin Idmanyurdu and Orduspor. At the summit of this unforgettable and breathtaking season, where Fenerbahce, one of the giants of Turkish football, clung to the league by goal difference, the Black Sea storm blew. After all this fierce points struggle and goal difference calculations at the bottom, Trabzonspor completed the 1980-1981 season as the champion by collecting 39 points, becoming the biggest winner of this most competitive season in Turkish football history.
