Favourites Portugal are level 1-1 with DR Congo at half-time in 2026 FIFA World Cup Group K. At the NRG Stadium in Houston, Portugal — among the strongest title contenders — could not establish the expected clear advantage in the opening 45 minutes.

Roberto Martínez's Portugal took the field with a star squad including Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes. But DR Congo, resisting with Sébastien Desabre's organised defence, made the most of their chances on the counter to reach the break level. Having beaten Cameroon, Nigeria and Jamaica to reach the tournament via the playoff, the African side again showed they can perform under pressure.

Portugal had more of the ball and the better of the attack in the first half, but DR Congo's disciplined defence and quick breaks were reflected on the scoreboard. It was another example, after Spain's draw with Cape Verde, of African teams capable of springing a surprise.

In the second half of a match refereed by Qatar's Abdulrahman Al-Jassim, Portugal are expected to step up the pressure for a win while DR Congo try to protect the parity. Ronaldo's form and DR Congo's resistance are among the biggest talking points for the final 45 minutes. The first three points in Group K are crucial for both teams' paths.
