Fenerbahce, who began the new season under head coach Ismail Kartal, have stood out not only for their attacking efficiency but also for their disciplined defensive structure. Across the Champions League second qualifying round two-legged tie against Gornik Zabrze and the first leg of the third qualifying round against Sturm Graz, Kartal's side have yet to concede a single goal in official competition. The low expected-goals-against figures of 0.06, 0.60 and 0.16 respectively illustrate just how few chances the defence has allowed opponents.
Having beaten Gornik Zabrze 1-0 at home in the first leg before securing the tie away, Fenerbahce then defeated Sturm Graz 2-0 at home, keeping a clean sheet for a third consecutive official match. Speaking after the win over Sturm Graz, Ismail Kartal commented: "We haven't given up on our tactical discipline, and our players are beginning to embrace our style of play. We're improving, but there's still a way to go" — a remark suggesting this consistency is no accident.
Fenerbahce, who have also shown strong attacking form and similar consistency in pre-season friendlies, will now look to carry this level into the start of the Super Lig season. Kartal's tactically disciplined approach is credited with giving the team a balanced look at both ends of the pitch.
