Across the Champions League second qualifying round two-legged tie against Gornik Zabrze and the first leg of the third qualifying round against Sturm Graz, Kartal's side have yet to concede a single goal in official competition. The low expected-goals-against figures of 0.06, 0.60 and 0.16 respectively illustrate just how few chances the defence has allowed opponents.
Having beaten Gornik Zabrze 1-0 at home in the first leg before securing the tie away, Fenerbahce then defeated Sturm Graz 2-0 at home, keeping a clean sheet for a third consecutive official match. Speaking after the win over Sturm Graz, Ismail Kartal commented: "We haven't given up on our tactical discipline, and our players are beginning to embrace our style of play. We're improving, but there's still a way to go" — a remark suggesting this consistency is no accident.
Fenerbahce, who have also shown strong attacking form and similar consistency in pre-season friendlies, will now look to carry this level into the start of the Super Lig season. Kartal's tactically disciplined approach is credited with giving the team a balanced look at both ends of the pitch.
