Liverpool's ownership picture is taking an unexpected turn with one of the world's wealthiest men entering the frame. According to Sky Sports, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has been approached to join a consortium seeking to buy a stake in Liverpool; the proposed investment could purchase as much as 30% of the club.
The background to the talks has also become clear. According to Sky News City Editor Mark Kleinman, Bezos has held discussions about joining a syndicate of investors led by former Queens Park Rangers co-owner Amit Bhatia — the son-in-law of billionaire steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal.
The degree of certainty around the process is also being carefully noted. A source stressed that Bezos is "not certain to proceed" with an investment in Liverpool; however, the mere possibility of the world's fourth-richest man (worth an estimated $257 billion, according to Forbes) becoming involved in such a deal has naturally captured significant attention.
The club's official stance has also been outlined. A spokesperson for current owners FSG officially confirmed the development, stating: "An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club."
The structure and scale of the proposal are also being compared to an earlier precedent. According to Sky Sports, the proposal is structurally similar to the 2023 Dynasty Equity investment, which valued Liverpool at more than $4.5 billion; the club's current value is reported to be around $6 billion. It is also noted that Bhatia paved the way for the Liverpool investment by transferring his stake in QPR to Ruben Gnanalingam this week.
The wider implications of this development are also being discussed. While FSG stresses it currently intends to retain Liverpool and that this is only a minority stake sale, a Sky Sports expert noted that the deal is likely to fuel speculation that FSG could fully exit the club in the coming years.
