Joao Cancelo edging closer to Barcelona return

One of Barcelona's defensive files is nearing its conclusion after a journey spanning several months. According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona remain confident of getting the Joao Cancelo deal done, with talks continuing with Al Hilal. The deal was not completed a few weeks ago, but Barca are convinced they will make it happen before the window closes; the player himself also wants to return.

This marks the final chapter of a process that has run for months. Cancelo joined Barcelona on loan from Al Hilal in January following Hansi Flick's request for defensive reinforcements, making 42 appearances and scoring 4 goals over six months; his loan deal officially ended at the end of June, shortly before Portugal's elimination from the World Cup.

The player's preference has also become clear. According to Mundo Deportivo, the 32-year-old defender has already agreed personal terms with Barcelona and has made it clear his priority is to return to the club this summer; the only remaining step is for Barcelona and Al Hilal to finalise the transfer by resolving certain financial and administrative details.

The timing has also become clearer. According to SPORT's David Bernabeu, it is now simply "a matter of days" until the final administrative hurdles are cleared and the transfer is announced. The deal is reported to be worth around €10 million, with the player set to sign a two-year contract; it is also noted that Barcelona plan to complete the transfer following the club's pre-season training camp in England.

This second Barcelona spell of the player's career also carries significance. Having moved from Manchester City to Al Hilal in the summer of 2024 and having previously spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Barcelona, Cancelo's permanent return this time is seen as a critical piece of the club's defensive rebuild.
