Jorge Jesus is Portugal's new head coach

The awaited official announcement about the head coach's role at the Portugal national team has arrived. Experienced manager Jorge Jesus has taken over the role by accepting the federation's offer. The 71-year-old manager signed his contract for a period covering the Nations League, Euro 2028 and the next World Cup cycle.

Jesus's appointment came right after Portugal's disappointing elimination from the World Cup. Losing 1-0 to Spain in the Round of 16, Portugal bowed out of the tournament with that result. The only goal of the match came from Mikel Merino in stoppage time. This match also carried extra significance as it was the last World Cup contest of Cristiano Ronaldo's career.

Right after the match, Roberto Martínez, who had been sitting in the head coach's seat, announced he was stepping down. The Spanish manager made his departure official with the words: "This was my last match with the Portugal national team." The federation was seen to move quickly to fill this vacancy and reached an agreement with Jorge Jesus.

Having managed Al-Nassr last season and made the team Saudi Pro League champions, Jesus's reunion with Cristiano Ronaldo through this role also draws attention. The experienced manager, who previously managed the star player at club level, is now expected to work with him again at the national team and lead Portugal into a new era. Jesus's squad planning and his first moves will be followed with interest in the coming period.
