Jürgen Klopp named new head coach of Germany

World football's most talked-about question has been answered: Jürgen Klopp is the new head coach of Germany. According to Fabrizio Romano, among the most trusted names in transfer news, the 59-year-old has taken the seat vacated by Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned after the country's World Cup debacle. Two years on from leaving Liverpool, Klopp will manage a national team for the first time in his career.

Germany's tournament had ended in bitter disappointment. Having topped their group, they were knocked out by Paraguay in the round of 32 in Boston, losing on penalties after a 1-1 draw — their first shootout defeat in World Cup history. Following crisis talks at the federation's Frankfurt headquarters, Nagelsmann stepped down on Friday, and the DFB's first and only target was Klopp. The famous coach confirmed the contacts himself, declaring he was "more recharged than ever" and ready, while his role as Red Bull's head of global soccer posed no obstacle to the move.

The man who took Mainz into the Bundesliga for the first time in the club's history, won two league titles with Borussia Dortmund and filled Liverpool's trophy cabinet across nine years — including the Premier League and the Champions League — is renowned for his charisma and his gift for building team cultures. German football had long regarded him as the dream candidate for this job.

A daunting task awaits the new boss: restoring a Germany side that has fallen short at major tournaments since 2014 to favourite status by Euro 2028 in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The Nagelsmann era, which began in September 2023 and peaked with a Euro 2024 quarterfinal, closes without the summit it promised.
