Kane's curse lifted: "He's not my enemy, we are friends"

England's captain and striker Harry Kane found himself at the centre of an unusual story at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Ghana's famous spiritualist Nana Kwaku Bonsam claimed he had "stopped" Kane in England's 0-0 draw with Ghana in Group L, then lifted this "curse", adding a whole different colour to the football agenda.

Bonsam had clearly announced he was targeting Kane in remarks to the British press before the game. Describing himself as "the most powerful spiritualist in the world", the spiritualist posted a video on social media after the England captain missed a clear scoring chance in the match in Boston. Performing some kind of ritual in the video, Bonsam addressed the England captain directly: "I am going to release Harry so that, in his next match, he can score. Harry, I will come and visit you. Don't be offended. We are friends."

Curiously, this supernatural tussle also drew the attention of world-famous illusionist Uri Geller. Known for claiming he had "moved the ball" on a penalty missed against Scotland at Euro 96, Geller stepped in to protect Kane and launched a counter-ritual, claiming he would block the spiritualist's "negative energy". Bonsam, for his part, had made similar claims before; ahead of the 2014 World Cup he said he was behind Cristiano Ronaldo's knee injury.

The real on-pitch side of this story was Kane's performance against Ghana. Kane, who shone with two goals against Croatia in the opening match to equal Gary Lineker's England goals record, could not take a clear chance from six yards against Ghana, and the match ended goalless. Kane showed a mature attitude about the miss: "I was waiting for an opportunity like that to fall my way. It did, and I just could not quite get over the ball. But I have been a striker long enough to know they do not always go in." After this draw, England continue to lead Group L.
