Klopp's Mbappé story: the most expensive non-transfer

Jürgen Klopp, expected to become the new Germany national team manager, shared a story with the public that surprised the football world. Working as a pundit for MagentaTV ahead of France's 2-0 World Cup quarterfinal win over Morocco, the experienced manager detailed the process behind Liverpool's attempt to sign Kylian Mbappé during his time in charge at Anfield.

Klopp revealed that they held talks over a young Mbappé, who was still playing for Monaco at the time, before the player's move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017. The manager began his comments by saying: "It was the most expensive non-transfer that Liverpool invested in." Klopp then explained how the meeting took place: "We flew from Blackpool to Nice. In Nice, the entire Mbappe family boarded a private jet with five rooms or something. We really went all out. Then we flew around in a circle, talked with the family, ate good food."

Asked why they didn't leave the plane during the meeting, Klopp gave an interesting response: "We couldn't be seen. We flew in a circle. It was fantastic. And then he went to Paris..." These words clearly demonstrated just how far Liverpool went in trying to secure Mbappé.

Sharing an emotional moment with Mbappé on the pitch after the match, Klopp also waved to the player's mother. The experienced manager also stated that he had held similar talks with two other French players, Ousmane Dembélé and Adrien Rabiot, but that he was unable to sign any of the three for Liverpool. Klopp's revelation found a wide echo on the football agenda.
