Koeman resigns: an era closes in the Netherlands

An era has come to an end in Dutch football. Ronald Koeman announced that he is leaving his role as manager of the Netherlands national team. The decision came right after the team's elimination by Morocco on penalties in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32.

Koeman announced his decision to step down via his social media account. In his statement, the experienced manager said he had decided the night before that it was time to step down as head coach, and expressed that their dream had been to make history at this tournament but they had fallen short. Emphasizing that the responsibility ultimately rests with him, Koeman said that no one feels the disappointment more than he does.

The Netherlands had gone into the final minutes of the knockout match 1-0 up through a goal from Cody Gakpo. But in stoppage time the score became 1-1 with a goal from Issa Diop, and the match went to penalties after extra time. Unable to get the result they wanted in the shootout, the Netherlands made an unexpected exit from the tournament. This result had also brought with it debate about Koeman's future.

With this departure, the 63-year-old Koeman's second spell with the national team has also come to an end. Leaving his post as the second-most prolific manager in the Netherlands national team's history with 64 games in total, Koeman had also been in charge of the team between 2018 and 2020. The Royal Dutch Football Association is expected to begin a search for a new head coach; how this process unfolds will be followed closely in the coming period.
