One of the Bundesliga's most talked-about transfer files has flared up with a fresh conflict. According to Sky DE, Koln have rejected Borussia Dortmund's offer for Said El Mala, which reached €42 million with bonuses; the club's expectation stands at €50 million.
The structure of the offer has also become clear. According to Sky Sport, the proposal consisted of a €26 million guaranteed fee, €8 million in easily achievable bonuses, and a further €8 million in bonuses tied to harder-to-reach conditions; Koln rejected the offer without leaving any room for negotiation.
Behind this firm stance lies a previous disappointment. Koln had previously accepted an offer worth around €50 million (€45m guaranteed + €5m bonuses) from English club Brentford, only for El Mala to personally reject the move shortly after; since then, Koln's position has been clear — any interested club looking to sign the 19-year-old Germany U21 international must pay a fee at least close to Brentford's proposed figure.
The manner in which Dortmund submitted their offer has also caused separate anger. According to Goal, the way Dortmund presented their bid caused irritation within Koln's management, with the club reported to be "not happy with the manner in which Dortmund are said to have tried to influence the player in order to make a move more likely"; following this development, Koln are reported to have immediately ended all talks with Dortmund, leaving the likelihood of a transfer this summer uncertain.
Koln's head coach also emphasised the player's commitment. Rene Wagner stated: "He's here, he's a player for 1. FC Koln, and he gives it his all every day. We had a long talk yesterday. He's throwing himself into everything, knows exactly what he wants to work on."
The picture on the competition side is different, meanwhile. For the player, who scored 13 goals in the Bundesliga in his debut professional season last year, RB Leipzig are also reported to be neither able nor willing to meet this fee.
