The return of Arsenal's versatile defender Jurrien Timber is taking longer than initially expected. According to The Athletic, despite featuring in last season's Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, the Dutchman was subsequently ruled out of the Netherlands' World Cup squad due to a groin injury. A statement from the Dutch national team at the time said the player had not recovered sufficiently from the injury to take part in the tournament in a medically responsible manner.
According to the report, Timber has joined Arsenal's pre-season training camp and continues his rehabilitation under the club's supervision. However, it's noted that he still needs a few more weeks before making a full return to the squad, with the player set to continue his individual programme as the club closely monitors his progress throughout pre-season. Timber's ability to play across multiple defensive positions is cited as a key reason his eventual return would be a significant boost for Arsenal.
Timber, who made 44 appearances last season but missed a large portion of it due to injury, is not expected to be available for Arsenal's Community Shield clash with Manchester City at Cardiff on August 16, nor for the start of their Premier League title defence that follows. It's emphasised that the club will need to carefully manage his workload throughout August to avoid losing him once again.
