As the NBA offseason unfolds busily, an important detail about LeBron James's free agency process has come to light. ESPN's well-known NBA reporter Brian Windhorst shared with the public the criteria the experienced star will use to choose his new team.
Windhorst used the following words on the matter: "He's not considering any of these teams where he would go in and be the centerpiece player. That's why he's only going to make a minimum contract or get an exception." This statement clearly showed that James, approaching 42, prefers to stay away from a role of carrying a team.
Having left the Los Angeles Lakers after eight seasons, the 41-year-old star is a free agent for the fourth time in his career. Having started last season with the Lakers as the No. 2 option behind Luka Dončić, then taking on a No. 3 role behind Austin Reaves later in the season, James's experience is shaping expectations for his role at his new team.
If James has to take on a No. 3 role or lower at his new team as well, it is assessed that this could be bad news for some of the finalists in this process, such as the Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors and Denver Nuggets. On the other hand, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves are shown as the best candidates for the role James is seeking. Which team the experienced star will ultimately choose will be followed with interest in the coming days.
