Arsenal's search for a left winger this summer window is taking shape around one of Spain's World Cup heroes. According to Ekrem Konur, Arsenal lead the race for Nico Williams, with Liverpool also joining the race with a £77 million release clause on the table. Sporting director Andrea Berta is exploring the deal, with Arsenal renewing contact with Athletic Club.
The background to this interest lies in two setbacks Arsenal have suffered. According to TeamTalk, Arsenal revived their interest in the Spanish winger after missing out on Morgan Rogers and amid uncertainty over the Bradley Barcola file; both Arteta and Berta are reported to be pushing for the move this summer.
The contract structure is also a factor easing this transfer. It is recalled that Williams signed a long-term contract with Athletic Club until 2035 last summer, a deal that includes a release clause worth around €90 million (£77 million), which the club raised by more than 50%.
The process itself has also become clear. According to Fichajes, Arsenal are aiming to secure a formal agreement with the player before depositing the clause amount at La Liga's headquarters; the club's goal is to expedite administrative procedures so that Williams can join pre-season training in England before the Premier League season begins.
The player's performances more than justify this intense interest. Williams played a key role in Spain's triumph, assisting Ferran Torres' winning goal in extra time in the World Cup final against Argentina. The 24-year-old, who has made 199 appearances for Athletic Bilbao with 37 goals and 37 assists, had his club season limited to just 20 La Liga starts due to injuries, but proved at the World Cup that he had returned to full fitness.
Competition also enriches this file. Liverpool, searching for a top-class winger to replace Mohamed Salah, are also reported to be closely tracking Williams, though Arsenal are currently the club stepping up their work.
