The future of Roma's young midfield star has turned into a race involving four English giants. According to Corriere dello Sport, Liverpool are considering a move for Manu Kone, with the Reds already having made contact with the Frenchman's representatives. This development is in fact part of a broader race that has run for weeks: Corriere dello Sport's Eleonora Trotta stated on her YouTube channel that Kone's agents have been "in contact with several clubs," with all four of Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal having made official "enquiries," though none has yet emerged as a clear frontrunner.
The fee negotiation is also central to this story. Roma have raised their asking price for the player twice in recent weeks: the figure stood at £43 million a few weeks ago and has now risen to £51 million (around €60 million).
The competition is not limited to England alone. According to a report from Corriere dello Sport's Jacopo Aliprandi, Atletico Madrid also made "determined attempts" for Kone in recent weeks, holding discussions with both the player and Roma, though their £34 million offer proved insufficient; Roma's "precise price" is stressed to be €60 million.
There is also a pecking order among the four English clubs. Manchester United are reported to have made the most progress among the interested clubs; the club has already signed Andrey Santos (£48 million from Chelsea) and Youri Tielemans (via a release clause from Aston Villa) this summer and is seeking one more midfield addition. Manuel Ugarte's exclusion from pre-season due to a knee injury has heightened the urgency of this search.
The player's profile also explains this intense interest. Signed from Borussia Monchengladbach for around €20-21 million in 2024 and under contract with Roma until 2029, the 25-year-old boosted his market value with his performances for France at the World Cup, where he featured in four matches; Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini also noted the club must respect its budget balance, adding there would be more clarity in the coming weeks.
