Liverpool's new target: Japan star Kaishu Sano

Liverpool's search for midfield reinforcements has settled on one of the Bundesliga's most eye-catching names. According to the report, the Reds are prepared to offer €60 million for Mainz's Japan international midfielder Kaishu Sano; the 25-year-old is expected to leave the Bundesliga club this summer. Should a deal be agreed, Mainz would complete a club-record sale.

Sano's value has surged following his World Cup displays. His most dramatic moment of the tournament came in the Round of 32 against five-time world champions Brazil: pouncing on a loose pass from Danilo, Sano skipped past Casemiro and slotted a low shot into the corner. Japan ultimately lost the match 2-1, but the goal became a career-defining moment for the player, announcing his name to the world.

Comments from Mainz's side suggest the door to a sale is open. Sporting director Niko Bungert confirmed the interest, saying: "It's obvious that a player who has played two years in the Bundesliga and was outstanding at the World Cup, probably the best player in his position, is in demand. It's well known that England is the league where outstanding players usually move. Our big advantage is that the player still has a long-term contract, so we're under no pressure at all and won't be rushing anything. If a club comes along with an offer, we'll consider it."

The race is a crowded one. Alongside Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund are also reported to be tracking Sano. Under contract until 2028 and having made 48 appearances across all competitions last season with 2 goals and 5 assists, the player joined from Kashima Antlers for just €2.5 million two years ago — underlining the scale of his rise in value.
