Fenerbahçe suffered a major upset in the opening round of the Süper Lig, losing 2-1 away to Gençlerbirliği. The match, played in Ankara, delivered a cold shower for the Turkish giants. The result stood out across the league given that both Galatasaray and Trabzonspor also dropped points this week.

In the first half, Fenerbahçe had taken the lead through a Talisca goal in the 13th minute. However, that advantage did not last long, as Gençlerbirliği equalised through Tongya in the 37th minute, sending the sides in level at 1-1 at the break.

In the second half, the Ankara side took control of the game. Gençlerbirliği went 2-1 ahead through a goal from Oğulcan in the 56th minute and held onto that lead until the final whistle. Fenerbahçe's substitutions and efforts in the second half were not enough to change the scoreline.

The defeat means head coach İsmail Kartal lost his first league match in charge of Fenerbahçe. Starting the season this way has caused major disappointment for fans of the Turkish giants. How Kartal will approach rebuilding the team following this defeat remains to be seen.
