Manchester United's midfield search this summer window has expanded to include a familiar name. According to BBC Sport, the club have added Botafogo's Brazilian midfielder Danilo to their radar as they assess options for another midfield addition. The 25-year-old, who was part of Brazil's World Cup squad, is considering his next move after his club received offers of around £25 million from Palmeiras and Zenit St Petersburg; Newcastle United are also reported to be interested in the player.
United's approach to this file is also flexible. The club is reported to be keeping multiple options on the table for its midfield plans, with even the possibility of not signing an additional midfielder this summer said to be under consideration.
The fee negotiation paints a rather lively picture. According to Sports Mole, Danilo's former club Palmeiras are at the head of the queue for the transfer, though Botafogo would rather sell the player abroad. According to a report from Brazilian outlets via FootballPlace, Palmeiras have officially offered €20 million, while Botafogo want around €40 million, with Zenit entering the mix with a reported €30 million bid.
The background to United's interest has also become clear. According to TeamTalk, Manchester United's owners INEOS have shown official interest in Danilo, with the player potentially able to link up with his national teammate Andrey Santos at Old Trafford; according to an ESPN Brasil report from May, Danilo had already emerged as one of United's key targets to replace Casemiro.
United's midfield priority, however, is not entirely settled. According to The Guardian, Eduardo Camavinga and Sander Berge have emerged as United's primary targets in midfield, despite the interest in Danilo and Manu Kone.
Danilo's career also carries a notable journey. Signed from Palmeiras for around £16 million by Nottingham Forest in 2023, where he contributed 6 goals and 4 assists in 62 appearances, the player returned to Botafogo last summer for around €22 million.
