With the conclusion of the season in La Liga, the top flight of Spanish football, a complete tragedy unfolded in the relegation zone. Following a marathon of intense competition, Mallorca, Girona, and Real Oviedo bid farewell to the league and were relegated to the lower division.

Undoubtedly, the biggest shock of the season was experienced by Girona. The Catalan side, which pulled off an incredible success story by finishing the 2023/2024 season in 3rd place and competing in the UEFA Champions League (UCL), paid a very heavy price for their inconsistent performance this season. Following their campaign on the European stage, Girona failed to hold their ground in the domestic league, experiencing a sharp downfall from the peak to the bottom and suffering the pain of relegation.

Muriqi’s Colossal Performance Wasn’t Enough to Save Mallorca

In Mallorca, another side bidding farewell to the league, Vedat Muriqi’s extraordinary individual performance was not enough to keep the team afloat. While Mallorca found the back of the net 47 times throughout the season, the Kosovar striker single-handedly scored nearly half of those goals (23 goals).

With this stellar performance, Muriqi secured second place in the La Liga top scorer race, writing his name among the elite. At the top of the goal-scoring charts was Real Madrid's world-famous star Kylian Mbappé with 25 goals. Muriqi's efforts immediately behind Mbappé were not enough to keep Mallorca above the drop zone. On the other hand, Real Oviedo, who fought with high hopes of staying in the league this season, fell behind their rivals and became the third team to say goodbye to La Liga.
