Lionel Messi-led Argentina beat England 2-1 in the second World Cup semifinal with yet another miraculous comeback, setting up Sunday's final against Spain. Following a goalless, foul-filled first half, England took the lead in the 55th minute: Harry Kane started a rapid breakout, Morgan Rogers delivered a brilliant cross into the box, and Anthony Gordon finished it home — his first ever World Cup goal.
Argentina struggled for a long stretch. From Djed Spence's last-ditch block on Giuliano Simeone to Jordan Pickford's outstanding save on a Nico González header, the South American giants squandered numerous clear-cut chances, and the scoreline remained in England's favour for much of the match.
Messi, however, arrived exactly when needed. In the 85th minute, Enzo Fernández equalized off a Messi pass; in stoppage time, Lautaro Martínez struck the winner, again assisted by Messi. Argentina scored twice within roughly seven minutes to completely turn the match around, repeating a similar miracle for the third time this tournament. Messi assisted both goals, adding yet another accolade alongside his standing as the tournament's all-time top scorer.
With this result, Argentina will face Spain on Sunday, chasing the feat of becoming the first team to win back-to-back World Cups in more than 60 years. England, meanwhile, are forced to postpone their long-awaited first final since 1966 for another cycle.
