NBA Legend Don Nelson Has Passed Away

The basketball world is mourning a great loss. Don Nelson, one of the most original and influential figures in NBA history, has passed away at the age of 86. In a statement, the Nelson family said: "On Sunday morning our beloved husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather Don Nelson peacefully went to be with the Lord, surrounded by his loving family. Throughout his last week, friends and family encircled him with love, sharing the blessing of his friendship and revisiting treasured memories."

Born on May 15, 1940, in Muskegon, Michigan, Nelson won five NBA championships as a player with the Boston Celtics between 1966 and 1976. Transitioning to coaching after his playing career, Nelson spent over three decades on the sidelines with the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks, setting an NBA record with 1,335 coaching wins. A three-time Coach of the Year, Nelson was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.

Credited with popularising concepts such as the "point forward" and "small ball" — a style that came to be known as "Nellie Ball" — Nelson is remembered for his significant role in the development of stars such as Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, Chris Mullin, Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki. Having received the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025, Nelson never won a championship as a coach despite his record win total, but was still regarded as one of the top 10 coaches in NBA history. Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle described Nelson as one of the most compelling personalities in professional sports.
