Official: Kang-in Lee at Atletico Madrid

A months-long transfer file has finally become official. Kang-in Lee joins Atletico Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain, official and confirmed; another one for Diego Simeone.

The fee and background to the process have also become clear. The transfer of the 25-year-old South Korean was completed for a fee of around €40 million; personal terms had been agreed months ago, with the player long wanting a move to Atletico.

The player's career at PSG paints a complete picture. Having come through Valencia's youth ranks before playing for Real Mallorca and moving to PSG in 2023, Lee made 124 appearances for the Parisian club over three seasons, contributing 16 goals and 16 assists; however, he always remained a rotation option under Luis Enrique, and did not start a single Champions League match last season.

This transfer also has a history of obstacles. The player's move to Atletico had been blocked last winter due to Luis Enrique's opposition, but the process is reported to have accelerated this summer following South Korea's elimination from the World Cup.

The player's role at Atletico has also become clear. Lee is set to sign a five-year contract until 2031, and is expected to take on an important creative role in Atletico's project, compensating for Antoine Griezmann's potential absence.

On PSG's side, meanwhile, this departure has a knock-on effect. The French giants are recalled to be targeting Maghnes Akliouche as a replacement following this exit, with the completion of the Akliouche transfer dependent on finalising Lee's departure.
