Official: Lesley Ugochukwu joins Galatasaray

Galatasaray's first major move of the summer transfer window has become official. The Yellow-Reds officially announced the signing of Burnley midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu. The 22-year-old French holding midfielder joins on loan until the end of the 2026-27 season for a €3 million (roughly £3 million) fee, with the contract including a conditional purchase option worth €26.4 million (roughly £22.5 million). Galatasaray will pay the player a net fixed salary of €2.65 million this season.

The details of the agreement are notable in themselves. According to press reports, the purchase option will automatically become mandatory should the player make around 25 official appearances. With Galatasaray set to play 34 league matches, 8 Champions League fixtures and cup ties this season, reaching that threshold is considered highly likely — effectively making this a permanent signing in all but name.

The player's background was shaped in some of Europe's most demanding leagues. Coming through the Rennes academy before moving to Chelsea for €27 million in 2023, Ugochukwu was subsequently loaned to Southampton before joining Burnley for €28.7 million in the summer of 2025. Making a combined 84 official appearances across the Premier League and Championship in England, with 3-4 goal contributions, the French midfielder is expected to add depth to Galatasaray's midfield rotation with this experience.

The personal role of head coach Okan Buruk behind the transfer is also highlighted. Initially targeting Manchester United's Manuel Ugarte, Galatasaray shifted their focus to Ugochukwu after the Uruguayan suffered an injury at the World Cup; Buruk is reported to have held video calls with the player to personally outline his tactical plans. In his first comments after the move, Ugochukwu said: "I'm very proud to be here. This was a dream, I've joined a great club like Galatasaray. I've come here to win," adding that he was eager to meet the fans.
