An unexpected crisis has emerged in Real Madrid's pursuit of Rodri, one of their biggest targets of the summer window. According to Catalan newspaper Sport, Manchester City are refusing to back down from their €70 million demand for the Spanish star, with part of that figure structured through variable bonuses. The report notes similar difficulties to those encountered in the Diomande deal are now being repeated with Rodri.
Per Sport, Manchester City are "executing their negotiating strategy to perfection" and have no intention of lowering their set price. The English club has no obligation to sell — despite Rodri's contract expiring in 2027, City are said to be willing to risk losing him for free rather than accept a discount. While Real Madrid have reportedly agreed personal terms with Rodri, and head coach Jose Mourinho has approved the move, no consensus has yet been reached at the club-to-club level.
Rodri, who won the Golden Ball at the 2026 World Cup and played a major role in Spain's triumph, has made his desire to return to Real Madrid clear. However, Manchester City's firm stance has cast serious doubt over whether the transfer will materialise this summer.
