Roma move for Greenwood: €40 million offer

AS Roma have moved for Mason Greenwood, their top target to strengthen their attack. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian club has prepared an opening offer of around €40 million plus bonuses for the 24-year-old Englishman, currently at Olympique Marseille.

The offer is expected to be submitted to Marseille once the appointment of the club's new sporting director, D'Amico, is formalized, meaning the deal could gather pace in the coming hours and days. There is, however, a gap between the two clubs: Marseille are asking for around €55 million. Although Roma's opening bid falls about €10 million short of that figure, the gap is considered bridgeable. Manchester United also hold a 40% sell-on clause on Greenwood's next transfer, which reduces the net amount Marseille would keep.

The reason Roma have a bigger budget than usual this summer is their qualification for the Champions League for the first time in seven years. Coach Gian Piero Gasperini had made clear he wanted a striker suited to his style and saw Greenwood as the ideal addition. According to the Italian press, the club is offering the player a contract until 2031 worth around €4.5 million a year.

Having rebuilt his career in France after his issues during his Manchester United days, Greenwood produced an impressive 26 goals in 45 games last season. Marseille's financial difficulties are another factor easing a potential exit. On Roma's side, the club may need to sell players such as Manu Koné and stay within UEFA's financial rules before completing the deal. How Marseille respond to this first offer in the coming days will shape the process.
