The future of former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook could take a surprising turn toward European basketball. According to journalist Gerard Solé, Greek giants Panathinaikos, Israel's Hapoel Tel Aviv and Dubai Basketball have all expressed interest in signing the 37-year-old American point guard. Solé notes that such a move, should it happen, would be an earthquake for European basketball.
Westbrook, a nine-time All-Star who wrapped up last season with the Sacramento Kings averaging 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 6.7 assists before becoming a free agent, has struggled to find a new home in the NBA. According to sources, part of the reason cited is that Westbrook is regarded as "difficult to coach." Sacramento is also reportedly uninterested in re-signing him, with the franchise looking to hand the backcourt rotation to young talent Darius Acuff Jr. next season.
Panathinaikos is described as possessing financial muscle, competitive pressure and a structure ready to compete for every trophy, while Hapoel Tel Aviv has a longstanding history of hosting NBA-experienced players and previously made contact with Westbrook in the past. Dubai Basketball, led by Xavi Pascual, is seen as one of the most aggressive projects on the European market. Some reports even suggest Hapoel is preparing a record-breaking salary offer unlike anything ever seen in European basketball.
