Mohamed Salah, one of the greatest legends in Liverpool's history, has opened up about how deeply his departure from the club affected him. Saying goodbye to Anfield after nine seasons, the Egyptian star admitted: "I cried more than I did in my whole life," stressing how painful it is to walk away from such a place.
The 34-year-old was given a standing ovation when he was substituted in the 74th minute of the season's final match, a 1-1 draw with Brentford. He kissed the turf and walked through a guard of honour formed by his teammates, visibly in tears. Salah confessed that the emotion did not stop on matchday, revealing he had also been unable to hold back tears at the training ground. He explained that the media always portrays him as tough and aggressive, but that inside he is a far more sensitive person.
The numbers explain why this farewell felt so emotional. Salah played 442 matches for Liverpool, scoring 257 goals and providing 120 assists. His 193 Premier League goals stand as a club record and the most by any overseas player in the competition's history. A four-time Golden Boot winner, he also claimed the club's assist record outright in his final game, his pass for Curtis Jones moving him past the mark he had shared with Steven Gerrard. Looking back, Salah said he had no regrets, insisting that the team won everything there was to win and that the love of the supporters mattered more to him than anything else.
His club future, however, remains unresolved. Now officially out of contract, the forward has not yet signed for a new team. He has hardly been idle, though: starring for Egypt at the 2026 World Cup, Salah converted a Panenka penalty in the historic shootout victory over Australia in the round of 32 and was named player of the match. After the country's first ever World Cup knockout win, Egypt will face Lionel Messi's Argentina in the last 16 on Tuesday.
Wherever he goes next, Salah's Anfield story has closed with tears, records and trophies, and it will live forever in the memory of the fans.
