Arsenal's attacking search this summer window has expanded with a bold new name. According to The Times, Arsenal join Barcelona in the race to sign Julian Alvarez; the Gunners are targeting the player for next season.
This development represents a new stage in a file that has run for months. The player himself is said to prefer Barcelona, viewing playing at Camp Nou as a dream; following the rejection of Barcelona president Joan Laporta's initial €100 million offer, the club is reported to be prepared to raise that figure above €130 million with bonuses included.
Arsenal's steps in this file are also becoming concrete. According to a report from Sky Sports Italy's Luca Bendoni, initial talks have taken place between Arsenal and Atletico Madrid at ownership level, with communication lines remaining open; it is recalled that Arsenal's sporting director Andrea Berta held the same role at Atletico before moving to the Emirates, and is playing a key role in these discussions.
There is another transfer behind this move. According to TeamTalk, Arsenal reached a €40 million (£34 million) agreement with Club Brugge for Christos Tzolis after missing out on Morgan Rogers, and are now targeting Alvarez as a second attacking addition; according to CaughtOffside, Arsenal have made "groundbreaking progress" towards Alvarez's transfer, with Atletico reported to be "ready" to approve his move to the Emirates.
On Atletico's side, meanwhile, there are mixed signals. Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil reiterated on Friday that the club has no plans to let the player go this summer, though it is recalled that Alvarez has told the club he wants to leave following the World Cup, with speculation he could even delay his return to pre-season training to increase pressure.
The player's profile also explains this intense competition. Having moved from Manchester City to Atletico in the summer of 2024 and contributed 29 goals and 7 assists in 54 appearances in his debut season, the Argentine forward's fee is valued between €130-150 million, with PSG and Chelsea also competing in this race.
