Six-time champions Bordeaux's end: sixth tier and ruin

A dark day has arrived for one of French football's historic clubs, Girondins de Bordeaux. The appeals commission of the DNCG (French football's financial watchdog) upheld the initial ruling excluding the club from all national competitions on Wednesday. Following the decision, the six-time French champions will, at best, compete in Régional 1, the sixth tier of French football, next season.

The reasoning behind the decision is entirely financial. British investment fund Sparta Capital officially withdrew from its project to take over the club, having been unable to secure the €9-10 million needed to guarantee next season's budget. The involvement of an American investor, hoped for as a last resort, also failed to materialize. Current club president Gérard Lopez is reported to have refused to finance next season; even Bordeaux Métropole's gesture of lowering the annual rent on the Stade Atlantique to €500,000 to ease the takeover process proved insufficient.

The file, however, is not limited to relegation to the sixth tier. According to the report, should the professional structure's economic, social and financial situation be deemed irreparably compromised, the commissioner responsible for overseeing the recovery plan could petition the Bordeaux Commercial Court for compulsory liquidation. According to local media, that liquidation ruling is expected by the end of the month; should that scenario play out, the club will experience one of the most dramatic moments in its history.

The roots of the collapse stretch back some way. Competing in the UEFA Europa League as recently as 2019, Bordeaux dropped to Ligue 2 in 2022, and after failing to return to the top flight, suffered an administrative demotion to the fourth tier in 2024. Unable even to fight for promotion from Championnat National 2 over the past two seasons, the club now faces the question of whether it can continue to exist at all.
