According to statements in the Portuguese press, Varandas directly responded to the election campaign run by the Yellow-Navies' candidate regarding the transfer of Colombian striker Luis Suarez.

Speaking about the transfer of the team's star player, Varandas stated that they would not enter into any negotiation process and directly announced the release fee. The Sporting President expressed his terms in the event of Hakan Safi winning the election with these words:

"If Hakan Safi wins the elections, Luis Suarez's transfer fee is 80 million euros. Not a single penny less. He doesn't even need to sit at the table with us, just paying the money is enough."
