Szoboszlai staying: terms agreed, signature pending

A file that has run for months on Liverpool's summer agenda is finally nearing a happy ending. According to Ben Jacobs, Dominik Szoboszlai and the club have reached an agreement in principle over a new contract; nothing has been officially signed yet, but terms have been settled, and the development is being described as a big boost for the club.

The timing of the agreement reflects a strategic choice. The Hungarian midfielder's contract already ran until 2028, so Liverpool could hardly be said to be under urgent pressure. However, concrete interest from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in Szoboszlai prompted the club to secure their star early.

The process itself, meanwhile, was long and full of ups and downs. Talks with the club began last November, and by April the player himself clarified the situation, saying: "There has been no real progression, so I cannot say anything new about my contract situation." Despite this, when asked about his future, Szoboszlai repeatedly made no secret of his intentions, saying: "I would love to stay, I like the city, I like the club, I love Anfield."

There are also minor inconsistencies between different sources. A Hungarian report claims the deal was officially signed this Thursday and runs for at least four years, while Jacobs' report today states nothing has been signed yet, with only an agreement in principle reached. The 25-year-old, who joined from RB Leipzig for £60 million in 2023 and contributed 8 goals in 49 matches last season, has been one of Liverpool's most consistent performers through a difficult campaign and was named a future captaincy candidate by Virgil van Dijk.
