The race for the London franchise in the NBA's European expansion is heating up. According to The Athletic's Amelie Claydon and Leon Imber, Nikesh Arora, CEO of cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks, has entered talks to acquire the London team, considered one of the most highly prized of the league's 12 new outfits. Sources say Arora has assembled a group of investors prepared to offer more than $1 billion for the franchise.
India-born Arora previously led the group that became known as the "Tech Titans" after acquiring a 49% stake in Lord's-based London Spirit, English cricket's most lucrative Hundred franchise, last year. That consortium reportedly included the heads of Google's parent company Alphabet and Microsoft, though it remains unclear whether either is involved in Arora's NBA Europe bid.
The NBA is aiming to generate billions of dollars by selling franchise rights across a dozen cities, including Manchester, Berlin, Rome, Paris, Madrid and Milan, as part of a league targeting a launch in the second half of 2027. The London franchise has attracted multiple bids worth hundreds of millions of pounds, including from the billionaire Reuben family, with the sale process expected to conclude within the coming month. Decisions on buyers for other cities, including Berlin, Madrid and Milan, are expected within weeks.
