The Greek Freak heads south: Giannis in a Heat jersey

The long-awaited big trade has happened in the NBA: two-time Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo has been traded from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Miami Heat. With the deal becoming official on Monday night, around 13 months of trade speculation came to an end, and the Heat landed the superstar they had long sought.

Under the deal, Antetokounmpo moves to Miami along with teammate Bobby Portis, while the Bucks secured a rich package. Milwaukee receive Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis, plus the No. 13 pick in the 2026 draft, a pick swap in 2030, first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, and a second-round pick in 2033. The trade is expected to be formally completed on July 6.

The superstar's future stayed uncertain for a long time, with a late tussle between Miami and the Boston Celtics. Despite the Celtics' offer centred on Jaylen Brown, it was reported that Bucks power-broker Jimmy Haslam preferred certainty and leaned toward the Heat's offer. So Miami president Pat Riley finally pulled off the star signing he had chased for years; Antetokounmpo became another landmark Heat acquisition after legends such as LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal.

On the court, the pairing of Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo is seen as one of the NBA's most powerful and versatile defensive duos, with both able to guard all five positions. Antetokounmpo, who brought Milwaukee its first title in 50 years in 2021, is chasing a second ring. Battling injuries last season and appearing in a career-low 36 games, the star still averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists. With the option to sign a maximum extension with his new team, the 31-year-old opens a new chapter at a Heat side known for its winning culture.
