In the 5th week of the Turkish Super Lig, Galatasaray, one of the strongest title contenders, defeated Kocaelispor 1-0 at home and took the top spot. The yellow-red team, managed by Okan Buruk, managed to get the critical three points even though they struggled against Kocaelispor, coached by their former player Selçuk İnan. Starting the match with pressure with the support of their fans, Galatasaray could not capitalize on their chances in the first half, and the teams went to the dressing room in a goalless tie. Making moves to break the deadlock in the second half, Okan Buruk sent Batrakov to the pitch in the 59th minute. The expected goal came in the 71st minute. Abdülkerim Bardakçı, the backbone of the defense, met the ball after an elegant assist from the talented substitute Batrakov and sent the leather to the net, putting his team 1-0 ahead. While it was noteworthy that Abdülkerim received a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct just a minute after the goal, Kocaelispor's efforts for a draw in the remaining minutes yielded no results. Increasing their points to 13 with this vital victory, Galatasaray took back the leadership seat temporarily held by their fierce rival Beşiktaş and finished the 5th week at the summit. Selçuk İnan's students, who left the field with a defeat, remained at 9 points and closed the week in 6th place.
