Rich Paul's own comments have clarified who controls the pace of this process. Speaking on the latest episode of the "Game Over" podcast with Max Kellerman, Paul delivered a clear message: "We're not going to be rushed. It's his choice to make and when he makes the choice, he'll make it." Paul added: "There's been several people to call and say, 'Hey, Rich, is there anything more we should be doing? We could be doing?' And my answer is, 'No. We don't need you to go above and beyond about anything.'"
The most dramatic moment of the process came from the Miami Heat organisation. The club's official YouTube page briefly shocked the sports world by sharing a live stream video titled "LeBron James Introductory Press Conference," dated July 27, 2026; the video was subsequently unlisted and made private. Miami Herald Heat beat reporter Anthony Chiang explained this was a mistake by the Heat's social media department while preparing for the possibility of James signing with the team, adding there was "no validity to it right now."
This mishap aligns with current market sentiment. New betting odds suggest the Miami Heat are the favourites; according to a graphic prepared by ESPN, this decision now represents the longest James has ever taken to announce a free agency choice throughout his career — with the wait now surpassing 468 hours.
Another aspect of the process is also notable. James' agent Rich Paul is reported to have sent a message to other NBA clubs to fill their roster spots and not wait on James.
