The secret behind LeBron's choice: faith in the Sixers

The real motivation behind LeBron James' choice of the Philadelphia 76ers has finally emerged. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, LeBron James believed the Philadelphia 76ers gave him a better chance at a championship than the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers.

Charania laid out this decision in detail on "First Take." "LeBron James made a decision today that he believes the Sixers are best positioned to go out there and win a championship. And so when he made it clear that this was not going to be a financial decision, he was able to go into it with a minimum contract, no matter where he ended up, he got the ability to pick where he felt he would have the best chance to win a championship. And he put his money where his mouth is."

This decision represents a genuinely unexpected upset. According to Heavy, until recently the Sixers sat fourth in the betting odds for James, at just 9%, behind the Miami Heat (46%), Cleveland Cavaliers (27%) and Golden State Warriors (17%).

How this picture shifted has also become clear. According to Yahoo Sports, the Sixers weren't seriously considered by James until they acquired Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics this summer, with reports emerging within 24 hours of that trade that James was taking the offer "really seriously."

Behind this shift was also a direct pitch. It is recalled that Sixers president of basketball operations-adjacent figure Bob Myers made a direct appeal to James on Rich Paul's "Game Over" podcast: "You hook me up to a polygraph, all these teams you're thinking about, I think the Sixers would beat those teams. Am I right?"

This decision also carries historic significance for the franchise. It is emphasised that the Sixers haven't reached the NBA Finals since 2001, the same year marking the club's last Eastern Conference finals appearance, and that James' signing gives the franchise a chance to win its first championship since 1983.
