The top-spot clash is Switzerland's: 2-1 over Canada

In the final 2026 FIFA World Cup Group B match deciding top spot, Switzerland beat hosts Canada 2-1 at BC Place in Vancouver. In a game that ended goalless at half-time, Switzerland managed to finish top of the group with their second-half goals and earned a more favourable tie, on paper, in the first knockout round.

Holding the upper hand in the first half but unable to convert, Switzerland made a strong start after the break. Murat Yakin's side went 1-0 up in the 46th minute through Ruben Vargas, with a Johan Manzambi assist. Coming right at the start of the half, that goal eased Switzerland. The Nati kept up the pressure and doubled the lead in the 57th minute, this time with Johan Manzambi finding the net after a Breel Embolo build-up: 2-0.

After the two-goal cushion, Canada tried to get into the game and manager Jesse Marsch made a string of changes. The hosts' resistance bore fruit in the 76th minute: with a Nathan Saliba assist, Promise David's goal cut the gap to one (2-1). In the closing stages Canada pushed for an equaliser; especially in the 90+5 and 90+6 minutes, on clear chances from Alistair Johnston and Promise David, Switzerland keeper Gregor Kobel produced two superb saves to carry his team to victory.

The stats of the match, refereed by Brazil's Ramon Abatti, laid bare the contest: although Canada led on total shots 13-6, the expected-goals (xG) edge of 1.27-1.06 also favoured the hosts. But Switzerland, with their effective second-half display, were the side to leave with three points. With this result Switzerland finish top of the group, while Canada, on four points, most likely secured progress as runners-up.
